I am a U.S.A. mason/musician who began working in the family masonry stone business 1969 I worked along the same masons who built the churches of the 20s and 30s. My family was involved in the stone jobs of WPA era. I am US Navy veteran and studied Law and Architecture at the college level, visited over 60 countries, was a union mason in NJ, and taught masonry a few times for the PA PCC program. I had my real estate license over 4 years and currently continue passing along many of my "Old School" mason techniques, I play the guitar banjo & fiddle and recorded in Nashville 1993 and toured The USA, Europe & China, I am now retired in southern Florida and still play a few times a month (check out my Facebook site) It is impossible to give masonry advice over the phone or internet. , My way is not the only way to do things, God bless, Mike

Not a big deal? Try doing this work with stone tools and no wheel. Does that add a degree of difficulty?
Hi lynwood,, I have a couple videos out "carving stone with ancient technology " Mike haduck, part 1& 2, watch them and then let me know what you think,, thanks Mike
Difference between using rebar and no rebar is progressive failure vs catastrophic failure. Which one is better and you get time to repair that in time?
Hi TJ, I got a playlist out on the pyramids, great wall, peru, castles, cathedrals etc, they never used rebar, thanks Mike
Thanks for the coaching. I just finished a similar job. Doing a finish coat later today. I used what I had. I didn't make a big deal out of it. I got it done.
Thanks Chris, I am glad to hear that. Thanks Mike
Hi Mike,, question , Portland cement "N" plus sand can it be used outside? Pennsylvania
Hi oaz, portland was portland and lime was lime, they got everybody confused with all these lettering, I still use Portland on the flat and mortar maybe with a little extra portland up and down, all my videos show what I used in my area, thanks Mike
@@MikeHaduck I thank you for answering my question when you say Portland on the flat, it means it can be a small slab.?
Leonardo DaVinci and the Mud Trick - priceless! also, congrats to you, Mike, for pronouncing "masonry" correctly, AND for being a banjo player. Keep on keepin' on...
Thanks grey, Mike
it's not "masonary", it's "masonry".
Hi gray, no its masonary, that was what the old timers who were building the churches, cathedrals and etc. Told me, it's these high falutin, book big shots who want to change the language, lol, Mike
Is this a 21 century?!)
Hi Anton, can't say, thanks Mike
@@MikeHaduck Thanks Mike!
Always use rebar that is stainless steel (316 steel). They do not rust and will last forever. If you use mild steel rebar in a place that has moisture, it's your fault. It is dumb engineering to use mild steel in infrastructure projects, or a shady one where they want it to fail so it becomes a repeat work.
Hi curio,, stainless last longer but as my buddy the plumber says going through concrete they corrode also, it just takes longer, I been experimenting with fiberglass for small stuff, the Roman's never used anything, thanks Mike
@@MikeHaduck 316 stainless steel specifically resist chloride corrosion. The only reason for people to not use it, is because it's more expensive and it eats into margin. Stainless Steel of this type is meant for centuries of use. Using mild steel in bridges or high rise or other infrastructure projects is unjustified and just bad. You can look around and try to find any project that used such steel (stainless 304/316) that failed. You will not find any. Fiber glass does not even come close to steel, problem here is both lack of strength and negligible crack resistance, not to mention those enclosed in polymer stretches more leading to more cracks. I would say the solution to rust in rebar is simple and straightforward. Use 316 stainless steel rebar, it retains all the strength and none of the disadvantages. And to top it, use cement with a greater ratio of calcium oxide, so that when cracks do form from load stress, it simply auto heals. Like the roman cement.
@curio78 hi curio, here's my opinion with my 50 some years of experience, maybe you will agree, and you can look at my playlistvwith the pyramids, peru, castles, cathedrals, great wall etc, none of which had rebar, and they are still standing, my other opinion on the Roman concrete is, it would fall apart in the pennsylvania weather just as fast as anything they got today,, weather is a big big factor, I'll be in Rome Sept. God willing, thanks mike
I don't know if he realizes that he has a specific understanding of chemistry, but his understanding of chemistry to this application is ultimate.
Thanks secretweapon,, Mike

I love the right angle square from plywood so simple 💯👍
Thanks darren,, Mike
I use premix for convenience. I am by no means a pro just an experienced DIYer. I use type S for most work unless it involves stone. Not sure if it was right but after 10 years my garage and house foundation are still standing. I was always told type S for below grade and N is only for above grade and never thought twice about it. Thanks for giving me a better understanding of the mixes.
Thanks biff,, Mike

i hadnt seen a video from you in a while Mike so I looked your channel up. Thanks for the update on your life. I always thought of you as a all time Pennsylvanian but you are really a Florida guy. Nice to see you got your dream. I used to have the same sort of life going down to florida and working for a while but getting pulled back up to Michigan for work responsibilities. Maybe one day I will get down there full time. Take care and enjoy your life. Nice video of your dad too👍
Thanks brian,, Mike
Tanks for the video!

Hi Mike. Glad to see new content coming from you in your new home base in Florida. I’m up in your old state but I’m located in Northwestern PA. My question is about an outdoor concrete patio that I’m getting ready to pour at my camp. The only local ready mix company recently closed so I’m going to make my own concrete old school. I was planning to use a rich 1:2:2 mix with added fiber and liquid air admixture to help with freeze thaw. Do you recommend the 1:2:2 mix for this application in my area based on your experience in PA? Or would a 1:2:3 mix hold up to our winters ok too? Really value your thoughts on this one based on your real world experience especially in our climate up north in Pennsylvania.
Hi Andy, if I mix it by hand I usually go ,1-1/4 portland to 2 sand and 2 stone, but that's me or if I use the ready mix bags I add a trowel full of Portland to a bag, but then again that's me, thanks Mike
Thanks Mike for the reply. That confirms that I’ll go on the rich side and stay with the 1:2:2 mix with a little heavy on the 1 of Portland. I’ll be thinking of you when I pour this patio “old school”. Ain’t no big deal right?
I would say a little more would be better than a little less, I hope it works out, Mike
That was Excellent! Watching you work a trowel and mag. float on foundation repair made me smile the whole video. I said, now that's a Tradesman! Thanks Mike.
Thanks snurb,, Mike
Amazing job explaining lime vs portland!
Thanks sam,, Mike
Question for you - planning a DIY pour for a few backyard steps and small pad, is standard quickrete ok or should I be using portland with a 1-2-3 mix?
Hi, I usually add a good trowel full of Quikrete is those instances, my opinion, but I have videos on that too, thanks, Mike
An absolute wealth of knowledge
Thanks,, Mike
poor me poor me -pour me a septic tank !
Thanks Dan, I sounds like a good song,, Mike
Excellent presentation, mentioning the old methods with the new methods . Mr. Haduck, please be careful with that fine dust cement as there were times in the video where it may have affected your breathing. Do be careful.. Thank you for submitting this video,
Thanks carmel,, Mike
Thanks for the video mike💪👍
Thanks marv,, Mike
Easily got my thumbs up! No stupid music, narrated by an actual person instead of lame/lazy AI, and we got to hear the actual sounds of the machinery, tools, processes, etc. Thank you!
Thanks tymz,, Mike
I wouldn't recomend this technique for poopie but a friend of mine needed a gray water tank and at the same time he had to get rid of his rotted out 1971, fiberglass, cuddy cabin. So he cut the hull and deck about four feet from the bow. Upended the result and dropped it in a hole. Think of the possibilities of recycycling upside down boats!!!
Thanks Habar, good idea, lol, Mike
I moved back to Rhode Island from Florida. I'll be back again !
Hi Wig, almost every morning I could sit on my outside porch and have coffee, I love, thanks Mike
I'm interested to see what you do with a leaning basement wall.
Hi Chris, depends on how bad it is, sometimes jack up the building and replace it,, I am not a fan of double walls, thanks Mike
When i built my house in the Keys the concrete tank was built in Sebring Fl. It had 2 seperate compartments, the solids stayed in the first one and the liquid emptied into the second one. There was a separate pump that pumped air into the liquid aerating it as is done in sewer treatment plants. Then the liquid drained into a drain field. My present home has a fiberglass septic tank of 1500 gallons, the liquid drains off into a separate 500 gallon fiberglass pump tank. The pump is like a sump pump with a float that activates the switch. The liquid is pumped to an elevated mound containing 3 ft long 12” high plastic domes, a total of 400 lineal feet of them in 4 separate rows. There is no stone used and no drain pipes, just the domes, then covered with fabric then dirt. I installed both systems myself, with inspections by the county health departments.
Thanks ernie,, Mike
Great stuff Mike! Thanks! What do you suggest for sealing a patio (up North of NYC).
Hi Nicholas, so.etimes sealers male it very slippery, so it's hard to say, thanks, Mike
@@MikeHaduck good to know. maybe i'll skip sealing it altogether. you encouraged me to patch my stone patio this morning. It was HOT out up here, so didn't get too much done, but getting started is 1/2 the battle. i think it's going to come out great!
Thanks a lot Mike. Thank you very much. I know you’re in semi retirement role, but keep them coming.
Thanks ronald,, Mike
Many years ago my uncle played the bagpipes for side money. He got called to work a funeral one time for 150 dollars , but he overslept. He raced around town till he found the cemetary , 3 guys were filling in the grave .. He got out and played anyway ( amazing grace ) .. The diggers had tears in their eyes and they all thanked him.. One guy said " In all my years digging septic tanks , I never heard anything so beautiful".
That's a good one,, better late then never, thanks Mike
Good to see you Mike hope you're well!!!!
Thanks Dave, I am fine, I hope the same with you, thanks ,Mike
Very interesting video and process. Imagine making just one on site how fun it would be!
Thanks jim,, Mike
Mike, I was really hoping that you would walk up to the concrete truck and "Honest Mike" would be behind the wheel. lol
Thanks Billy, he was down here, lol, Mike
Thank you so much we have learned so much from you here in nepa we will miss you ..

Hey Mike! Are you ever in the Pompano Beach, FL area? I am looking at enclosing a 1 car garage door with block.
Hi, I am retired and too many regs and license etc, but thanks for asking, Mike
Show us more about Florida now that your living down there. I love orlando myself. Only downside is its not by the beach.
Hi Jacob, eventually I will, thanks Mike
Beautiful work Mike. Big job. I wish i could get you up here in Philadelphia, Pa to do a job for me
Thanks Jacob, Mike
Thanks Mike! Do you wet and cover your concrete for a few days after you put it?
Hi Gary, I do, thanks Mike
How come they didn't just dry pour them? It's the greatest way ever for everything.
Thanks, I hear you, Mike
We use a lot of wire and rebar in building today, with our portland cement mortar or concrete. The problem is that although its initially stronger it only lasts about 50 years or 100 if you're lucky. This is because the cement cracks and water gets in and the metal rusts. We need to use Roman cement (think its called pozzolana) which lasts centuries. I wonder how many of our modern buildings will still be around in 100 years
Thanks hp, I hear you, Mike
Brother, You have conrete in you blood😅. Very interesting process.... Most people have no idea what it is like to grow up off the grid... Even before septic tanks where i grew up as a kid (The old outhouse 🤨). Ernie
Thanks Ernie,, Mike
I have a small decorative 2'x2'x2' pedestal/stand made out brick that's attached to my garage. It's mainly decorative in nature. The house is 30 years old and the joints on top are coming apart. My wife sets a bowl of flowers in the summer that constantly drains water onto it plus water gets in the joints in the winter causing freeze damage. Mike said not to set bricks horizontally. Should I use type S mortar to tuckpoint it instead of N? Then should I seal the horizontal brick? I live in Missouri which gets to 0 in the winter and is plenty hot in the summers.
Hi Paul, I would cover the planter in the winter so it does not get water and freeze, then it's up to you what you want to use to repoint it, depending on how hard the brick is, thanks, Mike
Years ago my boss installed a new septic tank for a customer whose house was an island. It was delivered late in the day so they placed it in the hole and planned to hook it up the next day. Over night the hole flooded and floated the tank out of the hole and onto the lawn.
Hi jander, I heard those stories before, same with swimming pools,, thanks Mike
